Who uses a word counter?
Writers use a word counter to hit target word counts for blog posts, essays, and articles. Students use it to stay within essay word limits. SEO professionals use it to optimise meta descriptions and page titles to the right character length. Social media managers use the platform presets to make sure posts don't exceed limits before publishing. Developers use it to validate text field lengths during testing.
How reading time is calculated
Reading time is estimated based on average reading speed. The average adult reads approximately 200 to 238 words per minute for general content. TextlyPop shows two modes: average reader (200 WPM) and fast reader (300 WPM). Toggle between them using the buttons above the text area. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, which is the average comfortable speaking pace for presentations and voiceovers.
Character count vs word count
Character count includes every letter, space, and punctuation mark. Word count counts groups of characters separated by spaces. TextlyPop shows both characters with spaces and characters without spaces so you can see exactly which metric applies to your platform. Twitter uses characters with spaces. SEO title tags are measured in pixels but roughly 60 characters is the safe limit.
Frequently asked questions
How does the word counter work?
The word counter splits your text by spaces and punctuation to count words. Results update instantly as you type — no button required. All processing happens in your browser so your text is never sent anywhere.
Does the word counter count characters with or without spaces?
Both. TextlyPop shows characters with spaces and characters without spaces separately in the stats bar so you can see exactly which number applies to your use case.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is based on 200 words per minute for average readers and 300 words per minute for fast readers. You can toggle between the two using the reading speed buttons above the text area.
What is the character limit for Twitter / X?
Twitter / X allows 280 characters per tweet. Select the Twitter preset in the platform limits section to see a live progress bar as you approach the limit.
Is my text saved or sent to a server?
No. All processing happens in your browser using JavaScript. Your text is never sent to any server. TextlyPop only saves your input locally in your browser so you can pick up where you left off if you close the tab.
